Watch the challenge kickoff from CIVTAK24
The CIVX TAK/ATAK for Smart Cities Challenge kicked off at the CIVTAK24 Conference, featuring insights from our host, sponsor, and keynote speakers. Hear from Christine Jung (Blue Clarity), Mike Feng (Griffiss Institute), Ralph Kohler (Air Force Research Lab), and Kirk McKinzie (SMART First Responder Technologist & Retired Fire Captain), as they share powerful ideas to inspire innovation throughout this exciting journey.
Tak 101 with Jimbo Michael from Tough Stump Technologies
In this video, Jimbo Michel from Tough Stump Technologies explores the benefits of the TAK platform, focusing on its ability to enhance coordination and safety during large-scale public events. He explains how TAK simplifies communication by providing real-time location tracking, reducing the reliance on verbal instructions. Jimbo highlights the platform's effectiveness in emergency situations, such as guiding police responses, and stresses the critical role of teamwork and understanding between coders and tactical personnel for successful implementation.
Delivery of Drone & Aviation Information to TAK with Michael Leckliter
Michael Leckliter, co-founder of Taktical Awareness and Knowledge Solutions, LLC, and a firefighter paramedic with the Corona Fire Department covered managing their TAC program and highlighted the benefits of integrating UAS (drones) and aerial video into the platform. In this session, Michael explains how these integrations provide real-time visibility, geospatial context, and augmented reality overlays to improve situational awareness for first responders. He also shared insights on bi-directional data sharing, tagging critical events, and offered guidance to TAC users and vendors on maximizing these capabilities.

OVERVIEW

The Team Awareness Kit (TAK) and Android Team Awareness Kit(ATAK) software platforms were developed by Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) scientists and engineers.  Originally used by United States Special Operations forces and warfighters, this platform has now been adapted to a civilian version which supports domestic government programs and commercial industries.  Examples of this civilian platform utilization includes hurricane response, wildfires, and event management.  As a long-term partner of AFRL, Griffiss Institute works to expand the availability and usage of the TAK and ATAK systems.
Mastering Large-Scale Event Coordination with Advanced Technology
Future State:
Large-scale public events, such as concerts, festivals, sporting events, or political rallies, involve the convergence of massive crowds, numerous stakeholders, and complex logistics. Successful execution of these events demands flawless coordination, real-time communication, and situational awareness to ensure safety, security, and seamless operations.

YOUR CHALLENGE

This hackathon challenges you to revolutionize the coordination of large-scale public events by leveraging cutting-edge technology, such as the Android Tactical Assault Kit (ATAK) and its civilian version (CivTAK). Your solutions should empower event organizers, security teams, public services, and volunteers with enhanced capabilities to manage every aspect of the event, from planning to execution, and crisis management.
Develop new approaches for First Responder safety and resource allocation using Android Team Awareness Kit (ATAK) - Civilian (also known as CivTAK).

BACKGROUND

The Android Team Awareness Kit, ATAK for short, is a technology developed by AFRL scientists and engineers, and over the past several years of using and refining in real-world combat zones by Special Operations forces and warfighters, this technology was has been adapted to fit the missions of local, state, and federal agencies. ATAK users, or “operators”, can be anyone ranging from volunteers, to military and law enforcement.  Using ATAK operators can view the location of other operators and potential hazards, a major advantage over only relying on hand-held radio transmissions for communications and awareness.  ATAK is currently in use by over 40,000 DoD, DHS, and military users; 32,000 nonfederal users; and 100 commercial licensees. More information can be found at the Air Force Research Laboratory website.

RESOURCES

ATAK/CivTAK Tutorial Series
Click here to access the ATAK-CIV, Tactical Assault Kit.
The Tactical Assault Kit is DoD nomenclature for the Team Awareness Kit (TAK) application: a mission planning, geospatial, Full Motion Video (FMV), and system administrator tool that reduces the operational footprint from a tactical laptop, to a commercial mobile device. The geospatial engine and communications component support Department of Defense (DoD) and commercial sector standards. Extensibility of the core platform is supported by the Software Development Kit (https://tak.gov), which enables any partner to develop mission-specific capability or contribute to the advancement of the baseline. Data can be pre-loaded into ATAK or downloaded from the network when available.
